Latest update from NOAA suggests an 85% chance of normal to above normal Hurricane Season expected. NOAA has increased this probability due to the High Confidence that an El Nino will form later this month into early September. EL Nino strongly aids in fueling any tropical development in the Pacific. Remember, Hurricane Season is in full swing until November 30th. Some of the strongest Atlantic Hurricanes have occurred in late summer to early fall. Also- just bc the TN Valley is hundreds of miles inland doesn’t mean you should ignore any Tropical Storms/Hurricanes that do develop as flooding from torrential rainfall is the #1 cause of death with all Hurricanes.
A few of the pics seen below are just some reminders of what these monsterous storms can produce. Below is the sequence of Hurricane Andrew that occurred August 22, 1992 and went down in History, at that time, as one of the costliest Hurricanes in United States History.
Shortly before crossing through the Bahamas, Andrew strengthened into a Cat 5 Hurricane on August 23. The system weakened slightly over the Bahamas to a Category 4 hurricane, but briefly re-intensified into a Category 5 hurricane on August 24 before making landfall on Elliot Key, and later in Southeast Florida
Hurricane Andrew emerged into the Gulf as a Cat 4 hurricane, and gradually curved northward toward the Southeast Gulf Coast States where it made landfall once again in Morgan City, LA.
And as we all remember Hurricane Katrina hit in late August as well (August 28, 2005). We will never forget the absolute devastation that it caused New Orleans, Louisiana but we should be strongly reminded of the widespread effects it had hundreds of miles inland as well as there were deaths reported due to flooding as far inland as near Northern Mississippi.
